School Trips

The museum offers curriculum based programming in a variety of subjects, such as Social Studies, Language, The Arts, and Math. Take your class back in time to 1899 for a fun half day program! Programs are available for all elementary grades (JK – Grade 8). Full day programs are available upon request (see additional details below):

Activity Options

All programs include:

  • A thirty minute lesson led by our “school marm”
  • Take home craft related to the season and/or current exhibits on display
  • Object based learning – self guided exploration of the museum gallery. Volunteers and staff are available to highlight special objects in the collection with an opportunity for discussion afterwards

Programs are inspired by the seasons and exhibits on display at the museum. Seasonal programs include: The Rural School Fall Fair, Christmas Pageants, Spring & School Gardens, Empire Day and more!

Additional Details

Extend your visit by participating in some or all of the following activities:

  • Outdoor games at the Barriefield Rock Garden
  • Walking Tour of Barriefield Village
  • Indoor games and additional craft activity

Please book your visit at least one week in advance of your preferred date and time. School trips are available Monday – Friday from 9am – 4pm. We recommend reserving a minimum of two hours from start to finish. Full day programs generally take 4 – 5 hours.

Due to the size of the building, we can only accommodate one class per program (up to 25 children). To save on transportation costs, you may wish to book one class for a morning visit, followed by a pick up and drop off of a class in the afternoon. Please let us know at the time of booking how many classes will be visiting throughout the day.

Beyond Classrooms

Beyond Classrooms Kingston is a program that moves teachers and their classrooms into community museums, art galleries and community sites for an entire week. The site becomes an extension of the teacher’s classroom where he or she can bring students to enhance their learning skills in critical thinking and problem solving while focusing on a subject or theme.

The Frontenac County Schools Museum will continue to host classes with their teachers in the 2019-2020 school year.

More information is available at the Beyond Classrooms website.

Read about the November 2016 Beyond Classrooms program at the museum in this article in The Kingston Whig Standard.
